As challenges go, the challenge of finding affordable housing in Eagle County is a huge one. Close to 140 percent of the average wage is needed to make monthly mortgage payments on an average-priced home in Eagle County, according to the housing-data company RealtyTrac. Rental rates are also prohibitively high, with 46 percent of local renters paying too much of their monthly income for rent, according to Eagle County’s Housing Strategic Plan.
Castle Peak employees often come from more affordable areas like Delta, Grand Junction, Montrose, New Castle, Rangely, Rifle, and Hotchkiss. Employees must drive long routes that are difficult to navigate in rough weather. Even on the sunniest days, Castle Peak staff members may have to spend hours on the road. “The housing situation calls for a creative approach,” says Castle Peak Director of Human Resources Staffing Specialist Lanie Martin. “That’s why Castle Peak offers temporary housing in three condominiums and offers apartment space at a nominal amount on occasion to employees.” View an article in the Vail Daily to learn more.
