Apple Valley Campus Receives Training Grant to Enhance Staff Capabilities

We are thrilled to announce that Augustana Care Health and Rehabilitation of Apple Valley, in conjunction with Dakota County Technical College (DCTC), received a $261,000 grant from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. Funds will be used to pay DCTC to further educate employees and increase patient and resident satisfaction.

Grant Background

The Minnesota Job Skills Partnership (MJSP) is a state agency governed by a board of directors who represent Minnesota businesses, labor, government and educational institutions. The Healthcare and Human Services Training Program, created in 1999, is one of five grant programs administered by the MJSP. This program was created for the purposes of alleviating healthcare and human service worker shortages and increasing opportunities for advancement for current workers in the healthcare and human services industry.

Collaboration

A team from Augustana Care’s Apple Valley campus began working with a team from DCTC on a joint partnership grant application in early 2017. The grant would provide direct funding to DCTC to pay for the development and implementation of training modules that would be provided to the staff at Augustana Care Health and Rehabilitation of Apple Valley.

Training Modules

DCTC is in the process of designing customized training for our staff in the following areas:

  • Body mechanics
  • On boarding / new hire training
  • Intravenous (IV) skills
  • Phlebotomy
  • Catheterization
  • Total parenteral nutrition
  • Care plans and care conferences
  • Dementia
  • HIPAA and social media
  • CPR / First Aid
  • Hospitality
  • Change and stress management
  • Team building / communication
  • Train the trainer

These courses will be taught at the Apple Valley campus over the next three years. The training, starting with Body Mechanics, will begin this March.  This module was designed to address safety issues, best practices, proper posture and mechanics for every department in the building.

This unique and specialized training will help maintain the high quality of care Augustana Care Health and Rehabilitation of Apple Valley delivers to residents and will further advance the knowledge and professional careers of caregivers.
